Mistakes Job Seekers Make Series: Clarification & Job Focus

These issues seem so basic that I think they get skipped over, yet, they are often the central problem many job seekers have. Clarification is critical in order to provide the necessary focus on the jobs/job titles you are pursuing.

In order to truly focus your job search strategy and align all of your actions, you need to concentrate on 2 or 3 specific jobs you want to find. Whether you think this number is high or low, the reasons for this number are:

• Too few jobs. If you pursue only one j… Continue

How a professonal trainer's 5 principles of strength can boost your job search

A client showed me an article he had written about fitness conditioning. He referred to Russian strength expert Pavel Tsatsouline, who used five principles to train the American military's special forces. At first blush, they relate directly to a successful job search:

1. Focused

Applying for jobs haphazardly, without a goal and without targeted employers or companies automatically weakens your job se

Careers: Did You Wind up in a Default Career? Prevention and Remedy

As a career coach and former High Tech manager, I’ve noticed that most people wind up in careers that are completely out of line with their college degrees or interests. When you ask people how they “chose” their careers, many of them answer with something very much like a track through the jungle

Have you checked your Parachute?

During skydiving lessons, one student asked: "If our parachute doesn't open... and the reserve doesn't open, how long do we have till we hit the ground?"
The jump master looked at him and in perfect deadpan answered: "The rest of your life."

For those of us who don't regularly skydive, our "parachute" is a figurative one - our backup plan; our escape route. And it pays to check, double-check, and even triple-check our parachute. That is, if we even have one

Do You Know Where You Fail in Your Job Search Strategy?

Reduce Stress from YOUR Job Search!

Dear Job Seeker,
If you are out there working on finding a job and you’re feeling like you don’t know what you’re doing – you probably don’t. Most of us don’t have the skill set for job hunting because we don’t do it that many times in our life. It would be like cooking 5-7 times in your life. Do you really think you’d remember what to do or how to do it?
I have a solution for you that I’d like to share with you. This solution will really help you where you n… Continue

Are You Vegging Out?

My husband and I currently both work outside of our home and our kids either go to school and daycare full-time or full-day camps in the summers. Our evenings are filled with sports and music practices for the kids, church activities and general housekeeping. We (like many other families) are so occupied with the busy-ness of life, that when weekends come, we are all ready to just veg-out.

Career Development: Are You as Good as Your Word?

A concept I don’t think gets talked about too much as it relates to a person’s career growth is integrity. Integrity sometimes sounds stiff and too conceptual but there are aspects to it that are so critical to your success that it bears pointing out – repeatedly.

In the world of work (and it doesn’t matter if we’re talking business or non profit) the primary commodity we trade off of daily is trust. If you are unable or unwilling to trust the other person to do what they say they will do, then… Continue

TIPS AND TOOLS

"Be prepared to take a position that’s lower on the food chain. I work primarily with young professionals, many of whom have been told for years to “follow their passion” and “refuse to settle.” While I’m obviously a believer in big dreams, I also think people should be practical enough to “seek cover” if needed under a job with a steady paycheck until the market improves. And who knows? If you give 100% to a “small” job, it could ultimately morph into a “big” opportunity in the long-run. When I entered the workforce, I couldn’t even find a job at a restaurant, so I started working as a temp in a marketing agency. Temping isn’t glamorous by any stretch but I saw the potential and ended up working at that company for more than six years. In that time, I more than doubled my salary and went from answering the phones to being the marketing director." Emily Bennington, Co-Author of Effective Immediately
